Forget New Year’s Resolutions and Conduct a ‘Past Year Review’ Instead – Here’s How!

We all love the idea of starting a New Year with a clean slate and setting our goals for the upcoming year. But often, we don’t really take the time to look back at what we have achieved in the past year. We may forget that this is an important step to take before moving forward. That’s why I strongly suggest conducting a “Past Year Review” instead of creating resolutions. In this post, I will discuss why it’s important to reflect on your accomplishments and failures from the past year, and how you can use your insights to create better plans for 2023.

Why New Year’s Resolutions don’t work

Many people set New Year’s resolutions, but few people actually achieve them. In fact, less than 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions actually achieve them. There are a number of reasons why New Year’s resolutions don’t work.

First, many people make resolutions that are too vague or unrealistic. For example, a resolution to “lose weight” is much less likely to be successful than a resolution to “lose 10 pounds by March.”

Second, people often try to tackle too many changes at once. If you’re trying to quit smoking, eat healthier, and Exercise more, you’re likely to overwhelm yourself and give up on all of your goals.

Third, people often wait until the last minute to set their resolutions. If you wait until December 31st to decide what your goals for the year will be, you’re not giving yourself enough time to realistically achieve them.

Finally, most people don’t have a plan for how they’ll achieve their resolutions. Without a specific plan, it’s easy to get sidetracked or give up when things get tough.

If you want to improve your chances of achieving your goals, forget about New Year’s resolutions and conduct a “past year review.” Spend some time reflecting on what went well in the past year and what could have gone better. Then set specific goals for the year ahead and make a plan for how you’ll achieve them.

What is a ‘Past Year Review’?

As the New Year approaches, many of us start thinking about all the ways we want to improve our lives. We make resolutions to lose weight, save money, or get in shape. But all too often, these well-intentioned plans fizzle out by February.

Once you’ve identified your goals for the new year, make a plan for how you’re going to achieve them. Write down specific steps you’ll take and deadlines you’ll set for yourself. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it!

How to conduct a ‘Past Year Review’

It’s that time of year again when we reflect on the past twelve months and set resolutions for the year ahead. But what if, instead of looking to the future, we took a step back and looked at the year that was?

Conducting a ‘Past Year Review’ is a great way to reflect on your accomplishments and challenges, and set goals for the future. Here’s how to do it:

1. Grab a notebook or open up a document on your computer.

2. Write down all of the major events that happened in the past year, both good and bad. Include things like job changes, births/deaths, moves, etc.

3. For each event, write down how it made you feel. Were you happy, sad, scared, relieved, etc.?

4. Take a look at your list and see if there are any patterns or themes. Are there certain types of events that tend to trigger negative emotions? Are there things you want more or less of in your life?

5. Based on what you’ve discovered, set some goals for the upcoming year. These can be big or small, but make sure they’re realistic and attainable.

6. Write down your goals somewhere where you’ll see them often (on your fridge, in your planner, etc.) and refer back to them throughout the year to help keep yourself on track.

10. What can you do differently this year to make sure last year’s challenges don’t repeat themselves?

The benefits of conducting a ‘Past Year Review’
